Economics Interview Experiences

Two 40 min interviews each split between fit and case. First case was whether a coffee shop would be profitable in some neighborhood and that went okay. Second was a fashion company losing revenue and I got tripped up on the math, kept second guessing my numbers. Fit was mostly why Bain why consulting which I had prepped.

Made an offer the same week. Single round with a managing director, about 45 minutes. Resume walkthrough and why real assets and infrastructure, why Brookfield over other alternatives managers. Very loose format. Short process for a firm this size imo.

Superday format, first two were behavioral and laid back but third one was supposed to be technical and had me pitch a long and a short and I completely froze on the short pitch. The Canadian economy and recent news also came up, would've been fine if I had just prepared a short pitch beforehand.

Interview questions given 20 minutes before, actually really helpful. Panel of 3 people 15 minutes all behavioral like tell me about competing deadlines and managing stakeholders and why you'd be the best candidate. Nothing about actual policy or in depth knowledge, standard OPS interview from what I've heard.

Group interview format with like 20 candidates and they picked 6 to move on. They had us do a group discussion about a market scenario, it lasted maybe 2 hours.

Got a better offer from a pension fund that same week so ended up declining. Panel interview with the team was pretty relaxed. Covered market knowledge and why asset management.

Recruiter screen was easy talked about projects mostly nothing too hard

No case or modeling. Single interview about resume and sectors I follow. Got another offer I preferred so declined.

Had to give a 10 minute presentation on a policy issue then answer behavioral questions about research experience. Panel of three. Brief French conversation to test fluency. Process took over 40 days.

The coffee chat was lowkey an assessment, heads up. One interview after that covering my background, global markets knowledge and some commodity price questions. About 2.5 weeks total.

Got to finals twice, no offer. First round was behavioral plus a group case. Second round was sector defense.

Basel III came up so study that. Behavioral first, then credit risk concepts. Got a scenario question on a deteriorating client.

They threw in a casual French question at the end just to assess comfort level. Behavioral round first, then a second round with a panel of 3. Had to do a 10 min presentation with slides in the final round. Took 42 days beginning to end, they warn about this. Ottawa placement.

Hour long panel interview. Behavioral plus questions on Canadian financial system risks. STAR format. No offer

Casey chatbot was straightforward this time, I'd failed it in a previous cycle by rushing. Two consecutive interviews on the final day, both had a case and a fit section. First case was a market entry scenario for a pharma company and the second was about operational efficiency at a manufacturer. Fit was why consulting and aspirations. The Toronto office has good energy.

Friendly interviewers, good experience even without the offer. Quick HR call then team round covered risk management concepts and gave me a scenario about a real estate portfolio under stress conditions, what risk metrics I'd monitor. I knew VaR and CVaR but some of the real estate specific risk language was unfamiliar. Montreal office.

2 rounds, they basically only are trying to ask you what you know about wealth management and it's a vibe check

Pretty easy. Recruiter call then panel with manager and two team members. Market interest and stock framework questions.

Very mission focused, barely any technical finance. Recorded video then panel

Credit case study with 30 min prep. Think it went ok. HR round before that was quick. Still waiting

First case was a market sizing question about insurance premiums in a new geography. Second consultant gave me a market entry case for a financial services firm and the quant part was harder than expected. Montreal office is French forward so know that going in.

Tell me abuot yourself, explain a past project, a couple basic behaviorals. Maybe 25 minutes total. They described it as fairly easy on the posting and that was accurate. Ottawa co-op placement through my university.

Waiting on security clearance now so we'll see. HR round was general career stuff, panel was behavioral about policy work and handling situations from past experience. Housing policy context in the questions was interesting

Almost 2 months but they were upfront about the timeline. HR interview about career goals first, then panel with two managers, all STAR method. Wanted examples of analyzing financial data. Also had a short Excel modeling test.
