Mechanical Engineer Interview Experiences

10 min phone screening with HR about education and a couple behavioral questions. Then about 3 weeks later a 30 min department round with two members of the team. First round was easy, second had some technical questions about mechanical systems and a lot of safety culture. Security clearance started after offer.

Look up suncor's values before going in, they came up a few times. Hirevue first with 4 to 5 behavioral questions. Second round was Teams with a team lead and HR, one hour split between behavioral and some technical questions about mechanical systems and process equipment.

Phone interview then in person at the Guelph facility. Friendly interviewer. Asked what I know about the company and how previous supervisors would describe me. Weakness question came up. They basically knew my resume line by line so solid answers are necessary.

No technical engineering questions at all, surprised me. HR on Teams first then a second call with the team lead and a current co-op student working at the site. Behavioral the whole way through, why Teck versus other mining companies, a time you worked on something with safety implications, strengths and weaknesses. Came with relocation support since the role was on site in Highland Valley.

had to prepare a technical presentation on a design improvement for one of their aircraft components, pretty unique process. then two separate interviews that were entirely behavioral in STAR format and every single question tied back to their core values like safety and innovation. they want concrete data and metrics in your answers.

Interviewers were patient when I needed time to think appreciated that. Got a call about a week after applying, 30 minutes with the team lead, behavioral questions about failure and team conflict.

Games then hirevue then one live interview only 15 minutes fast process.

Talk about a time you worked under a tight deadline, a time you solved a problem with limited info. That kind of thing. Behavioral panel with two senior engineers, behavioral questions the whole way. Process took 5 weeks, they warned about that upfront. Security access forms added more time after.

They went deep into my second year design project, FEA experience was a big plus. Technical panel with two senior engineers covered structural fatigue, FEA basics and composite materials.

They care a lot about attention to detail here. Technical was with an engineering supervisor, machining tolerances and quality control standards, ran through a CNC manufacturing scenario.

Nothing technical at all, just two behavioral rounds. Had to confirm relocation. Drug test after offer lol

General behavioral questions about why this position and teamwork. A few technical questions about CATIA and Solidworks experience, not difficult just awareness level. Whole thing was 30 to 40 minutes. Interviewers were warm. Montreal/Dorval site.

One 45 min interview all STAR behavioral, risk on a project and balancing school with extracurriculars and no technical at all which surprised me

Webex interview with two engineers. Situational questions about handling equipment failure mid shift, safety focused throughout. Had to give a specific example of stopping unsafe work. Know the values going in cannot stress this enough

They pushed hard on why I chose specific materials in my design project. Technical round was with a couple engineers from product development. GD&T, tolerancing and manufacturing process questions.

Thought it went well but it didn't. Two rounds on Teams, HR then engineering manager and another engineer. Technical questions about thermodynamics and rotating equipment.

Relaxed vibe. HR then manager interview. Asked about lab courses and handling pressure. No offer, took a month

They clearly read my resume before the call i could tell. Panel had HR, team lead and two technical people. Asked about PID controllers and design decisions on a specific project. In person at Aurora.

Got offered a site tour after the offer, pretty cool. Technical interview was with two senior engineers. Piping and stress analysis, some thermodynamics, then a behavioral about communicating a technical recommendation to a non engineer.
